Dell releases Vostro 430 desktop

Dell this morning added a new mid-range tower to its home and small business line. The Vostro 430 is Dell's first system in the range to use Intel's Core i5 and, even in the base model, starts off as a quad-core desktop. Dell claims that its least expensive system is as much as five times faster than a 3.6GHz Pentium D in some tasks.

Dedicated Radeon HD 4350 graphics are stock but can be replaced with either a GeForce GT 220 or a GeForce GTS 240. Upgrades can bring system speed higher still with options for 2.8GHz or 2.93GHz Core i7 processors, up to 16GB of RAM, Blu-ray drives and up to 1TB of hard drive space.

The line starts at $699 with a 2.66GHz Core i5 but with just 1GB of RAM and an 80GB hard drive to keep prices down. For now, systems will continue to use Windows Vista but will be ready for Windows 7 next month.
