Fujifilm Real 3D W1 arrives in US

updated 07:45 pm EDT, Wed September 30, 2009

Point-and-shoot captures 3D video and stills

Fujifilm has finally released its Real 3D W1 point-and-shoot camera in the North American market, following initial availability limited to Japan. The camera integrates two pairs of sensors and lenses, enabling stereoscopic still captures and video recording. Users can also take still pictures at 10-megapixel resolution, while 3X optical zoom is available for both 2D and 3D images.

The company also offers a viewer, the Real 3D V1, that displays 3D images on an 8-inch screen without requiring the user to wear dedicated glasses. The device provides many of the functions expected of a digital picture frame, along with special controls for the perceived level of 3D.

The Real 3D W1 is soon expected to arrive at retailers and carry a price tag somewhere around $600.

    $600?!

My interest in this is high, but SIX HUNDRED DOLLARS???

I appreciate the fact that it needs two lenses, etc, but that should add maybe $50-100 to the cost of a point-and-shoot.

Add to it the fact that it has very little optical zoom and not a lot of other features and it really doesn't look like a very good deal.

Call me when this is around $300 and I'll take another look.

    $600 is not that bad

Its more than just two lenses - it has a 3D screen that does not require glasses for the 3D effect. Add in the cost of 2 10MP sensors, and the fact that it is a specialized market (they will sell far less of these than a regular camera) - than it is actually pretty reasonable price.

If they sell, you could expect to pick one up for $300 in about two years.
