Intel Classmate PC facing mass cancellations?

updated 04:05 pm EDT, Wed September 30, 2009

Orders for Intel Classmate PC cancelled

Orders for Intel's Classmate PC have been canceled and shipments suspended from governments and OEM partners in many emerging markets, Taiwan-based component makers said. According to a Wednesday DigiTimes report, this is due to the economic downturn and the buyers in question reassigning their budgets to fight its impact. As well, the necessary network infrastructure rollout needed to provide content for the educational PC in developing countries has slowed for the same reason.

Makers of the PC that include Quanta and ECS are not expecting to be seriously impacted by the cancellations, as the amount of Classmate PCs orders and their profits are relatively small. Intel made no comment on the cancellations, saying only that it will continue to working with its partners on developing the educational PC.

The Classmate PC is an Atom-based netbook targeted at students, particularly in developing countries where regular notebooks would be too expensive.
