Ballmer claims gains in Windows marketshare

Also dismisses Safari, Chrome

Windows is regaining some of its marketshare, claims Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer. "We're gaining share. Apple is expensive," Ballmer says in a new interview. "And in tough economic environment, people get it. Their [Apple's] model is, by definition, expensive. And we've actually held or maybe even gained just a tiny bit of share relative to the Mac in the last 12 months. And it's not really Snow Leopard. It's really Windows PCs versus Mac."

Over a period of several years, Macs have been gradually gaining marketshare next to Windows PCs. Snow Leopard is believed to be one of Apple's most successful operating systems ever, and Mac sales have maintained growth since the introduction of cheaper MacBook Pros earlier this year, even as PCs have been hurt by the global recession. Sales were flat or even down in early 2009 however, and Apple has missed out on the popularity of netbooks.

Netbooks are "just the first battleground," says Ballmer. Microsoft has lowered Windows 7 prices to better compete with Snow Leopard, and Ballmer is dismissive of most competition for Internet Explorer. "The most successful [alternate browser] by far is Firefox," he says. "Chrome is a rounding error to date. Safari is a rounding error to date. But Firefox is not."

    It's still Windows...

no matter how you look at it. Maybe it's Ballmer that doesn't get it. Na, it couldn't be. I mean, he was right about the iPhone after all, wasn't he?

Ballmer, we could just eat you up

Kinda funny how much time, money and marketing they expend against this "rounding error" of a company. Their actions belie their words. The last time Ballmer spoke about Apple's measly share, it was in a room of reporters where most of them were using Apple laptops.

More market share for Apple is great, but the last thing they need is to have anything approaching a Microsoft-sized share of the market. That outsider/alternative status works pretty well for them.

Oh, and what's Zune's market share again? Hmm, lemme think, if I round off to the nearest zero...

    awe man

Nothing is worse then looking through a beautiful display of RSS news feeds and seeing Ballmer's ugly mug stinking it up... if anybody needs a pie in the face - its this guy!!

A list of the top selling cars include names like Ford, Chevy, and Toyota. Does that mean they make better cars then Audi, BMW, and Mercedes? Should we laugh at the new features these cars have because they are expensive?

See, heres what Monkey boy Ballmer doesn't get - if people are willing to pay twice as much for a similar product... that means the cheaper product must be so much worse that people are willing to pay a premium to not use it! The only reason MS is still around making noise is because apple hasn't yet released an OS that can run on a generic PC - if MS had any real competition - they would be through!!!
