PowerbookMedic launches new DualDrives for MacBooks

updated 03:20 pm EDT, Wed September 30, 2009

Allow capacities up to 1.5TB

PowerbookMedic has launched a new line of DualDrive options, said to double the internal storage capacities of Mac notebooks. A DualDrive is user-installed in place of a Mac's optical drive, allowing a second hard drive to be connected. As a tradeoff, owners lose internal CD/DVD functions.

A DualDrive can handle up to 750GB in iBooks, PowerBook G4s and non-unibody MacBooks, but is limited to 500GB in a unibody MacBook version. Total capacities can range from just over 1 to 1.5TB in non-unibody systems, or up to 1.25TB in unibody machines.

Prices start at $60 for a bare DualDrive, with no hard disk included. DualDrive 320GB/5400rpm options are $140, while 500GB/5400rpm options are $180. The 500GB/7200rpm models are $210, and the 750GB/5400rpm choice for non-unibody Macs costs $260.
