Samsung AMOLED 12M ships with 3X zoom

Samsung Mobile left little time for a recent leak to sit and today launched the AMOLED 12M. Already the company's second 12-megapixel camera phone, the touchscreen phone is rare in having true 3X optical zoom as wll as other features of dedicated cameras, such as tap-to-focus, a xenon flash and image stabilization. Its name appropriately betrays the 3.3-inch, 800x480 AMOLED display and its more color-accurate image.

As a media phone, the AMOLED 12M can record 720p video and play back this or other video in formats like DivX, H.264 or XviD. About 4GB of storage is built in to give users basic storage, but a microSDHC slot allows for 16GB or more of added space. GPS is noticeably absent but is compensated for by 3G and, in the handset's native Korea, a DMB tuner for live digital TV.

In Korea, Samsung's new phone should be ready for SKT in early October. Worldwide plans haven't been mentioned, but they would both need additional 3G frequencies beyond the local 2,100MHz band as well as a replacement for DMB; it's rumored that GPS and Wi-Fi would replace the tuner elsewhere.
