iPhone app downloads reach 2b

Apple this morning said that App Store downloads had reached the two billion mark. The news follows just 158 days after the company said it had reached one billion downloads and now has over 85,000 apps with over 125,000 registered developers. It proves that the rate of downloads "continues to accelerate," according to Apple chief Steve Jobs.

The tally has downloads from the iPhone and iPod touch store averaging about 6.33 million downloads per day between reaching the initial milestone and today's date. In the past, Apple has stressed that its download figures are for first-time downloads for a given computer and not updates to what users already own.

That's too many apps...

Microsoft is sure that there are too many apps for people to choose from and that the App Store will close down from users not being able to decide which apps to download. This will cause a new syndrome called App Overload. Microsoft is lucky that 99% of all those apps are completely useless. Microsoft will concentrate on quality over quantity. Poor Steve Ballmer. He must be fuming about not having developers, developers, developers.

The accusation of a high percentage of useless apps is NOT consistent with 2 billion downloads.
