Verizon backing away from Palm Pre?

updated 06:25 pm EDT, Thu September 24, 2009

Verizon may not carry Palm Pre

Although claiming to be on the rise, Palm may have been dealt a serious blow through a rejection by Verizon, a rumor hinted this afternoon. Supposedly in touch with those near discussions, TheStreet claims Verizon has dropped the Pre from its future plans. Why this would be hasn't been explained.

Such a reversal would be unexpected for Verizon. It has repeatedly telegraphed signals that it has wanted to carry the device and as late as last month had database entries for the smartphone that usually precede an actual launch.

If accurate, the change of heart would imply either that Verizon may have reconsidered the option following cooling Pre sales, giving it little incentive to add the device, or else that it may still be committed to Palm but only to a newer smartphone model. The most likely candidate is the Pixi, a direct replacement for the Centro that will likely cost $99 or less on contract.

Regardless, a pullback from Verizon could be dangerous for Palm. In North America, it has been limited to selling the Pre through Bell and Sprint, both carriers seen as on a decline and sometimes as a disincentive by themselves. Smartphone sales are recovering thanks to the would-be iPhone rival but have still resulted in wider losses than predicted.

By contrast, much pressure has been placed on carriers besides AT&T to pick up the iPhone. Publicly, Verizon has said its own stance is a non-issue and that it's up to Apple to decide whether or not it wants to offer a Verizon-capable iPhone.

Neither Palm nor Verizon has confirmed or denied the rumor, although Palm said it has never referred to Verizon as a carrier partner.

    Apple strikes again

Pressure form Apple if Verizon wants to carry the mythical iTablet. Hmmmmm, that would mean Apple is imitating Microsoft's business strategies....

As a Verizon customer I have to say...

They carry the crappiest phones. They need the Pre and a bunch of Android phones to make their line-up more appealing.

I think the iPhone Achilles heel is the lack of background tasks. The other makers should play this up. This whole "Notification Server" stuff is c***. If you're out of range of wifi or cellular, you can't get alarms??

Maybe rumors of Verizon carrying the iPhone in the near future are true? I doubt they'd drop the Pre for the iTablet. That's not really that much like a Pre, and without an iPhone, Verizon needs something to compete in that arena.

As a Verizon user, I hope the day comes that I can get an iPhone. I refuse to use AT&T's crappy service. Also, I agree that Verizon has crappy phones, but don't they all? They all break and they obsolete them so fast, I can't even get accessories for my phone 6 months after I purchased it. What a load of c***!

Honestly, we need more competition in the cellular service market. None of the carriers do a great job. With some, you get the products you want, others the price point you want, and others the service you want. You can't seem to get that right mix to make you happy.

    What's going on??

Perhaps its just a rumor. Perhaps Palm was making demands of Verizon that weren't going to fly.

My guess is that Verizon sees some issue with the Pre, or Palm is building a new model that will be launch on Verizon's network. Or maybe Verizon has decided to start pushing the Android OS and will heavily market that technology. Who knows.

One thing that everyone seems to agree on, Verizon needs some a better smartphone OS product.
