Images emerge of Microsoft's own phones

Microsoft Pure and Turtle images

A handful of images have leaked of what are widely believed to be the first Microsoft-branded phones. The renderings slipped out by Gizmodo appear to confirm the Turtle, a vertical QWERTY slider that also appears to have a touchscreen, as well as the Pure, a more conventional touchscreen with a side-sliding keyboard. Both have a very rounded design influenced by Sidekick creator Danger, which Microsoft bought out last year, and an interface mockup that borrows heavily from the visual style of the Zune HD.

Little else has been given by the source for the supposed images, although both the Pure and Turtle have previously been pinpointed as co-designed by Sharp and fitting into Microsoft's Pink platform. This would incorporate elements of Zune design on top of Windows Mobile and may have specific hardware guidelines, such as a fast processor, a high-resolution touchscreen and more typical smartphone features like GPS and Wi-Fi.

Their launch info is still a mystery, though Windows Mobile 7 isn't due to ship until the second half of 2010 and is the most probable time frame for Pink to appear.

Huh? Just turn the Zune HD into a phone.

As an iPhone user, I have to admit the Zune HD has great design reminiscent of the Nokia-owned Vertu phones. I even wish Apple would introduce aluminum materials into the 3GS with sharp edges. But Microsoft came out, IMO, with a better design for the Zune HD with an OLED screen. And so the next logical step would turn it into a phone.

And then these plastic phones are surfacing. I have nothing against the Sidekick creator, Danger, but those designs are not appealing anymore. Scrap it before it comes out. It just looks like one of those Motorola phones and the last time I checked, their mobile phones are close to dead.

    Zune HD Phone.

    My two cents.

Atleast Microsoft has moved on to ripping off the designs of other companies and is realizing they can't copy the beauty and style of an apple product. The turtle looks just like a plump Palm Pre and the Pure looks like every other Samsung and LG product on the market. Way to go Microsoft I think you have a couple of winners here.

    "girls phones"

Personally, I'm already sick of this new small, rounded square format (the "Pure"). Bell has a couple of phones with this shape and style and all the ads are aimed right at young (self-identified no less), "pretty girls."

It's demeaning and stupid to think that all girls want is a phone that can text and looks like a makeup compact. I would bet money that the Pure will be marketed in bright colours, possibly have a pink version and will feature in ads with a lot of teenage girls out for a night on the town with their little girlie phones.

Did they get a deal on brown plastic?

Reminds me of the color they get when they recycle every color LEGO into one batch to make steering wheels and combs.

Looks like a typical first gen MS offering. It has all the earmarks; soviet style design, clunky as h*** with--no doubt--the buggy & insecure MS mobile OS, topped with a release date putting it 4 years behind the market leading iPhone.

To their credit they're not offering it in brown.

    Suck time

Yet more proof that Microsoft has zero sense of design. And I'm sure the interface is clunky to match.

So it matches the visual style of the Zune. That's a sure formula for success.

    purely generic

    Talk about nondescript design!

I'll have to reserve judgement until I actually see one. I'd assume the "new" OS is simply warmed over WinMobile, just as Win7 isn't much more than Vista with a new skin.

MS could still surprise everyone, as they have been poaching designers and engineers for a while, but I seriously doubt it. Their design sense is fatally flawed, essentially lacking and always has been. It's in the MS DNA.

The Turtle is cute. Gazoobee is right about the "girlee-ness" factor. Make it pink and it could easily be confused it with a birth-control pill dispenser or diaphragm case.

Mister Softy is merely the Soviet equivalent of technological and creative bankruptcy. All they can do is make crummy, outdated, barely functional copies of everything

    Aptly named

It's brown, tapered and belongs in the toilet: the Microsoft Turtle-Head.

I know, I know.. bathroom humor. Simply couldn't hold it in...
