Point Grey details USB 3.0-connected HD video camera

updated 10:30 pm EDT, Thu September 17, 2009

Camera sends uncompressed 1080p stream at 60fps

Point Grey has provided additional details regarding its USB 3.0-connected HD video camera that will be making an appearance at the Intel Developers Forum. The camera prototype integrates a 3-megapixel CMOS sensor manufactured by Sony. The sensor allows the camera to output raw, uncompressed 1080p images at 60 frames per second.

On the computer side, the camera is connected to a USB 3.0 interface card built by Fresco Logic. The PCI Express controller chip is built on an Intel i5-based motherboard from Asus.

Streaming the raw HD video allows the computer's main processor to handle compression, instead of the camera components. The system is claimed to offer more flexibility over the different types of compression, while allowing certain processes, such as facial recognition, to work on uncompressed video for higher performance.

The camera, along with a variety of other USB 3.0 devices, will be demonstrated at the IDF between September 22nd and 24th.
