Digital Performer 7 adds new effects, Custom '59 modeling

updated 09:20 pm EDT, Mon September 14, 2009

Speaker cabinet emulation, channel strip window

MOTU has launched Digital Performer 7, the latest version of its music production software. Users can now choose a new Custom '59 amplifier model that replicates the sound from classic guitar amps including the Fender Bassman, Marshall JTM45, and Marshall JCM800. The interface provides full controls for tone settings, drive, and tube combinations.

The new Live Room | G component emulates speaker cabinets and offers four mic channels, adjustable mic positions, and equalizer controls on each channel. The plug-in is based on physical modeling technology designed to provide the sound of a speaker cabinet placed in a real room.

MOTU has added a channel strip window that can be used to access the channel mixer for each track. EQ and dynamics are both controllable directly from each mixing-board channel, while users can view V-Rack virtual instruments side-by-side with disk tracks. A new info bar also allows adjustment of mixer channel settings in any edit window.

DP7 allows users to resize the Counter window as needed, without limits placed on the width. Markers are now displayed in large type in the control panel or counter window, allowing easier navigation. Lyrics can be typed below the notes on the QuickScribe page, or pasted directly into the lyric window from a separate program.

The update adds support for Pro Tools 8 and Pro Tools HD systems, along with Wave64 extensions to the Broadcast WAVE file format for files larger than 4GB. The sample-rate conversion algorithm have also been improved to work efficiently, while maintaining a 138dB signal-to-noise ratio.

Digital Performer 7 requires Mac OS X 10.4.7 or higher and can be purchased for $395. Registered users of earlier versions can upgrade for $195, while an upgrade from Performer carries a price of $295.
