Samsung says OLED notebooks due in one year

updated 12:45 pm EDT, Fri September 4, 2009

Dependent on industry progress

Samsung's first deployment of OLED notebooks should occur in about a year, an executive from the company explains. Samsung's head of worldwide sales and marketing for computers, Kyu Uhm, revealed the information at this week's IFA expo in Berlin. "Samsung is the largest OLED screen manufacturer. And as soon as it's available commercially for laptops we will adopt it," says Uhm. "Probably sometime Q3 next year."

Based on Gartner reports, OLED screens are expected to become standard on notebooks within the next five years, says the senior European product manager for Samsung, Patrick Povel. OLED has several advantages over conventional LCD screens, including higher brightness and contrast, better color representation and lower power consumption. Such displays are currently expensive to produce for anything but small devices however, such as Sony's Walkman X-series media players, or Microsoft's forthcoming Zune HD.
