New Zune software to launch with Zune HD

Zune update may bring HD movies, more

Microsoft broke news through its monthly Zune newsletter today that the Zune HD's launch in two weeks will also come with the first major update to the Zune media software in a year. The company is silent on what this will include but promises an "all-new" app with "exciting new features" that will arrive on September 15th, the same day as the new media player itself.

The news follows an unusual absence of details from Microsoft regarding the software. In the past, the company has normally announced new software upgrades at or near the same time as device upgrades.

Only a few clues have surfaced as to the most likely features for the Zune software, though some of these are believed to address gaps in features between Apple's iTunes Store, the App Store, and in some cases the Zune itself. The most prominent is the revelation that the Zune HD will support third-party apps and will likely need a new app management system in the PC software for downloading and syncing new software. Multiple rumors have also pointed to 720p movies complementing existing TV shows as the Zune HD's signature feature is its support for playing back 720p video. [via Engadget]

HD? Lower screen resolution than iPod Touch!

    What a joke.

Typical Microsoft double speak! They call the player Zune "HD" as if you're going to get high quality video on this player when it doesn't even equal the quality of the iPhone or the iPod touch.

And, I wouldn't waste overheating a pocket video player just to watch 2 hour 720p movies on my TV, when 90% of the time I'm watching video of lower quality than my iPod touch.

It's rubbish! If Microsoft wanted my money, it should have been a 11" multi-touch tablet running a competitor's operating system.

    Its Got HD

It's god HD on the name man, its gotta be an incredible player. Blows away the iPod Touch since the iPod Touch doesn't have HD on it. There you go.

What is your basis in fact stating that the Zune HD will overheat when playing a 2 hour movie at 720p? If you cannot prove a statement like this the leave the FUD out of your comments.

    alrighty then!

"Blows away the iPod Touch since the iPod Touch doesn't have HD on it. There you go. "

so, that's what it takes! Nothing more, nothing less. Just add HD to a device and it blows away the Touch! Why didn't anyone think of that before! So simple. Nothing else matters. Just give us that HD and to hail with interface, apps... none of it matters! What a brilliant move.

You realize he was using sarcasm, right?

And he has a point. The Zune (or any other touch-based player for that matter) can "blow away" the iPod touch if; 1. The buyer doesn't care about the apps and 2. Cares only about sound quality. I have an iPhone for phone use, mobile internet, and apps.... BUT for listening to music I use my Sony X-1050 because is sounds so much better than the Apple players. This is a simple fact of life.

Aside the constant fanboyism nonsense that exists on this site (I still cannot believe folks actually think like that) other devices are just as good as the iPhone/iPod....IF they meet your needs.

Haha. You apparently don't read much. This blog is a fanboy heaven. Fanboy comments on real blogs like engadget and BGR get demoted and laughed at. Take a look for yourself.

And you didn't know he was being sarcastic. Good cover up. Hahaha. Amazing.
