Recent incident only one of several
UK carrier O2 has once again encountered severe data interruptions, significantly impacting iPhone owners, multiple sources say. The most recent outages began during the region's Bank Holiday weekend, and O2 has confirmed a problem that "lasted for around two hours on Saturday." According to PC Advisor and comments posted on O2 and Register forums however, outages have extended well past Saturday, running into Wednesday morning.
O2 subscribers have so far experienced several interruption incidents during 2009, mostly split between July and August. Though some people have been affected only in terms of broadband access, others have been unable to use e-mail or even SMS services. A form of alleviation may come in the near future, as O2's exclusive hold on the iPhone is expected to end as soon as next month, potentially paving the way for more even distribution of iPhone traffic across two or more networks.

The number of users will only distribute evenly if half of O2's existing iPhone customers migrate to a second carrier. Otherwise, O2's issues will remain exactly the same. I think most of their customers are tied to a contract anyway. Duh!
