Apple provides demo copies of Snow Leopard Server

updated 09:15 am EDT, Wed September 2, 2009

Limited to group settings

Evaluation copies of Apple's new server software are being offered to select groups.

In a bid to promote its new operating system, Apple is says it is now distributing free evaluation copies of Snow Leopard Server. To qualify, people must fill out a form on Apple's website, and represent a business, government agency, non-profit organization or some form of educational institution. Specifically excluded from the promotion are resellers, students, NPOs with less than 10 people and anyone under the age of 13.

In exchange for an evaluation copy, people must avoid using the software in a production capacity, or later reselling it. Any feedback provided is also automatically the property of Apple. At present, Apple is estimating a shipping time of two to three weeks for each free edition of Server, delivered via FedEx.

    Only in the US

Unfortunately this offer is only available in the US. I would have been interested to try it out (and would have been eligible). Hopefully they will extend this worldwide.

    On order

I just filled out the form. Can't wait to get it here. I work for a private university with about 12% Mac computers.

    Indeed

Agreed with edinburghmac - I've long wanted to see what Apple's Wiki software is like, as if it's any good, it would pretty much justify the cost of a Mac Mini to run it as a workgroup Wiki.

Apple has been doing this for years

This is not a new program, although it's possible that the internal workings have changed. I obtained an evaluation copy of 10.5 Leopard Server back in the day via this program, and while I did not participate in any earlier offerings (if any), I have heard from a couple of colleagues that they believe this program dated back even to the 10.4 Tiger Server days. The 10.5 Leopard Server evaluation had a limited-duration serial number, I believe 60 or 90 days worth, but I do not recall for sure at the time as I long-since migrated to the purchased version.

I ordered my 10.6 Snow Leopard Server evaluation copy via this program the day the link was first changed over, as I will be basing recommendations on same to my company's various clients. It's an excellent offering, and it will let me get my feet wet immediately before having to come up with the $499 upgrade price (still a wonderful deal!). My clients depend on my consultants to be able to make solid recommendations on Apple's various products, so this offer will go a long way towards helping me to remain competitive with some of the larger, more well-funded firms out there. Kudos, Apple!

    The Signup Page is Broken

The signup page appears to be broken! When I load the page in Safari or Firefox the page stops at the Country. No address, submit button, etc.

    Help!

    Thanks for posting about this!

    Does this expire?

Does anyone know if this will expire after a number of days?!
