Industry sources claim iPhone ringtones en route
Apple is reportedly preparing to allow iPhone owners to download ringtones through iTunes, according to CNET News. Music industry sources claim the company has established deals for the necessary distribution rights. Although customers already can create their own, the new service will offer an alternative to the DIY process.
Considering many iPhone owners are accustomed to creating ringtones for free, the source anticipates Apple will price the downloads far below other portals charging as much as $3. The exact pricing, however, remains unknown.
Apple is expected to announce the new service at the September 9th event which will focus on music-oriented products and services. Other reports suggest a new full-length album format, known as Cocktail, will also be unveiled, potentially as a new feature available through iTunes 9.

On-phone-editing
My guess is that with movies now being editable on the phone, it will now be possible to do a similar edit of purchased music in order to make the ringtone on-phone and download it directly to the phone (or the phone will just edit the already-purchased track and put it in your library for you).
