New ODBC Admin Tool

In Brief: Actual Technologies has release a new application which acts as a replacement for the ODBC Administrator tool which was dropped by Apple in Snow Leopard. ODBC Manager is a free utility that configures data sources to be used by programs such as Excel and FileMaker. The application not only replicates the functions of Apples now defunct utility but also adds new features such as the ability to use underscores in data source names. ODBC Manager is compatible with Mac OS X 10.4 or later and can be downloaded from the developers website.

Another iPhone developer has posted a blog entry about its woes with the App Store approval process. Blunder Move, developers of the iPhone game Chess Wars, were able to get their game into the App Store but quickly found a bug that made the app unusable. An update was quickly released that fixed that problem but unfortunately caused a few new bugs to crop up. The developers then came up with a v1.2 update that they believed had finally smoothed out all of the issues. This release was submitted to the Apple six weeks ago but is still yet to be published. The developer goes on in his story that he knows a few people who work at Apple, so in search of more information contacted them. He was then directed to email the submitters but is yet to receive any response. Unfortunately for Blunder Moves, nothing can currently be done to inform their customers of this information directly within the App Store.

The developer claims that Apple's slow response has resulted in a series of one-star reviews that will potentially make it harder for the app to succeed even if the new update is posted. The full story can be read on the developers blog but note that some strong language is used.

    Watch out

We don't like those drivers because they use some kind of reverse engineering to get into some of the databases and for others they do things like launch developer tools written in Java in the background on the user's machine which reinterprets everything.

Here is an easier URL to cut/paste that will take you to Apple's official download page if you don't receive the ODBC Administrator via Software Update:
