LG to ship 15-inch OLED TV in September

LG to show 15-inch OLED TV

LG on Sunday said it would launch its previously rumored 15-inch AMOLED (active matrix organic light-emitting diode) TV set sometime in September. When it launches, the LG set will be the largest AMOLED display actually on the market, trouncing Sony's 11-inch XEL-1. LG will show the 15-inch AM-OLED TV at the IFA 2009 show in Berlin.

Compared to traditional LCD panels, AMOLED uses self-glowing materials that have better picture quality and are both more energy efficient and thinner, largely because they don't require backlights. The technology is still relatively new and expensive, however, which hurt availability.

The 15-inch OLED TV is expected to arrive in Korean stores in November, before becoming available in other markets sometime in 2010. An LG executive also promised that a 40-inch OLED is due sometime in the "not too distant future."

Sony has been selling the XEL-1 for years now at $2,500. Sony has plans to release a larger OLED TV sometime in 2010.
