Wi-Fi connection issue hurts iPhone 3G owners

updated 10:10 am EDT, Thu August 20, 2009

iPhone 3G Wi-Fi problem

An issue with Wi-Fi connections is affecting iPhone 3G owners, according to forum discussions. Those with the problem cannot connect to Wi-Fi networks, regardless of signal strength. The originator of the forum topic notes that Wi-Fi may only work after a phone has been freshly rebooted. Alternately, multiple people have commented that while a connection may technically persist after a phone has been put to sleep and awakened, users may suddenly find themselves unable to receive data.

Other contributors to the topic suggest that the issue began only after they tried updating large applications from the App Store using Wi-Fi. The original iPhone and the recently-released iPhone 3GS do not appear to encountering difficulties. It is unclear whether it is hardware, software, settings or a combination of the three is causing the problem, as Apple has not issued a statement.

    Wi-Fi works fine here

iPhone 3G, fully updated, I use WiFi quite a bit each day at home and work. I only reboot my phone about once every 1 to 2 weeks on average (usually after syncing) I have once run into it not working with Wi-Fi a month or two ago, which as mentioned a reboot resolved, no problems since then.

    Slow News Day?

Must be desperate for something to report if this was the best you could find trolling the Apple Discussions forums. You might want to look at how many are 'Me Too' with 1 or 2 posts as opposed to veteran users. Very, very few posts from knowledgeable users. A few admittedly but basically the percentage you might expect to see simply due normal problems in daily usage.

No story here folks, move along.

    not seeing it

I've got a 16GB iPhone 3G and am not seeing any of these issues. I usually update larger apps on my desktop rather than directly on the phone so that might be contributing to some of those who are having issues.

    re: not seeing it

same here, Most iPhone App purchases/updates I download to my MacPro then sync to the iPhone... although I have downloaded 4 or 5 smaller apps while traveling for a couple of weeks in July. I always restart after adding/updating apps on my iPhone.

    Fixing wifi problems

I had replaced my Iphone due to a faulty sound switch, and after upgrading to 3.01 OS I couldn't access wifi. Though I had the correct password 3G was telling me it was incorrect. I called Apple Support and the tech (who was VERY helpful) learned from his supervisor that the 3G has problems accessing WEP wireless routers and it DOESN'T like any channel over ten. So I reset the router to WPA and the channel to 1 (Netgear 801 2.6 ghz). I was able to immediately access my network and the crowds roared in appreciation. Apple came through with 5 stars on this one.

    yes, I have a problem on 3GS

Hello, I have a WiFi problem on the 3GS, software version 3.0.1. It only started a couple of days ago. Yesterday in the morning e.g. I could not find any WiFi network although I usually catch about 10 in my appartement. After reboot (I went for soft reset directly) it worked normally. Today again the WiFi stopped working while surfing on the internet while the wifi sign still showed connection and excellent strenghth. So I deactivated and reactivated WiFi, then not network was found again. What is this s**** now???
I hope, that this is not a hardware problem. I had the phone dropped once (1 meters fall, but having a PVC protection case and landing on a soft floor). Shouldnt be that sensitive right?
I am just about to ugrade to 3.1 version. Lets see what happens.
