MBP Firmware Update 2.0
Apple on Wednesday released Hard Drive Firmware Update 2.0, which addresses issues with 7200-rpm, 500GB MacBook Pro drives. Users were reporting that their computer would freeze for several seconds, before beeping and clicking. These are reportedly signs of overworked reading mechanisms. Apple released a statement last week saying it was working towards a solution to the problem.
In order to complete the firmware update process, users must launch the updater application stored in /Applications/Utilities/Hard Drive Update.app. The updater will launch automatically when the installation is complete.
Although Apple has not stated what causes the issue, it is presumed there is a compatibility problem with the computers Seagate Momentus 7200.4 G-Force hard drive. The drives are said to spin up and down frequently, possibly generating the sounds reported by users.
