Archos prepping own Android app store

updated 08:55 am EDT, Wed August 19, 2009

Archos Android and AppsLib

Archos today sent a formal invitation for the already confirmed September 15th introduction of its Android tablet but also teased some of its features by laying the groundwork for its own app store. AppsLib would differentiate itself from Android Market, as well as competitors like the iPhone's App Store, by focusing on high-end devices. Every app will need to support an 800x480 resolution (or 480x800 when rotated) and should be prepared to support 720p video over HDMI for either large-resolution apps or HD movies.

The initial developer spec also points to features either teased in advance or expected as part of Android, such as the 5-inch touchscreen and accelerated OpenGL graphics.

Like Android Market, AppsLib won't be limited to one manufacturer; Archos expects other companies to use it themselves. Its own tablet is expected to be the centerpiece and, when it launches, should be considered an advanced communicator with built-in 3G data and voice, Wi-Fi and up to 500GB of hard drive storage.
