Casio reveals compact cameras with smart AF

Casio Exilim Z450 and Z90

Casio this morning upgraded its Exilim Zoom compacts with two new models that focus on software, not hardware. The EX-Z450 and EX-Z90 both have an Intelligent AF addition that can recognize many objects in a scene, not just humans, and automatically tune both focus and exposure to capture what it believes is the right subject. They also have a new Dynamic Photo compositing mode that can cut out a moving subject and put it in another shot by taking a single photo with a solid-hued background.

Of the two, the EX-Z450 is the more advanced with a 4X zoom, 28mm wide-angle lens paired with a sensor-shift image stabilizer. It shoots at the by now common 12 megapixels but has some of Casio's better scene modes, including a landscape mode and a makeup mode that softens the detail around humans' faces. The EX-Z90 is simpler with the same resolution but a basic 3X lens. Both can capture video at up to 720p at 24 frames per second.

Casio ships both cameras at the start of October and will provide the EX-Z450 only in a champagne color for $200. The EX-Z90 will cost less at $150 and should come in black, pink and silver.
