Apple ready for 50 million iPhones a year by 2011?

50M iPhones by 2011?

Apple has the potential to start selling over 50 million iPhones a year by FY11, argues Bernstein Research analyst Toni Sacconaghi. Simply through a projected 27 percent growth of the smartphone market in both 2010 and 2011, says the analyst, Apple may gain 10.3 million more in sales, assuming the current marketshare holds. The company is currently expected to sell 20 million phones by the end of FY09, which arrives in September.

The thrust of growth could come from an increased number of carriers in existing sales regions. In the US alone, adding Verizon as a carrier option in 2011 could increase sales by over 11 million; in Asia, extra carriers could add 4 million phones. The same move in Europe is said to have the potential of adding 3.5 million units.

If Apple manages to seal a deal with China Unicom, some 2.9 million iPhones could be sold in China. A pact with China Mobile has the potential to double that number.

Figures could exceed 50 million in FY11, says Sacconaghi, if Apple works on offering more pre-paid phones, and/or ones without data requirements. 75 percent of all cellphones are said to be used on a pre-paid basis, while ones without a data focus are believed to represent 80 percent. "We believe that more aggressively targeting the prepaid market with lower price models or offering an iPhone that does not require a data plan -- but still has WiFi connectivity -- could significantly expand Apple’s addressable market," the analyst comments.

The company is claimed to have two options: reduce pricing on current phones, or produce a new, stripped-down device. The latter could potentially cut down profit margins.

    I'd love to help . . .

Unfortunately, the iPhone is not compatible with Alltel's (soon to be Verizon's) network, nor is it compatible with AT&T & Apple's business arrangement. I'd take a chance switching to AT&T, but I can't help Apple sell more iPhones there either, because AT&T doesn't offer wireless service in my area.

    AT&T

In FY 11 the iPhone will be free with a contract and available on all networks, it will be hard to find someone without.

We'll have one or more companion tablets, 500.000 apps, a revolutionized publishing business and MS will sue Apple for monopolizing the handheld market.

    an iPhone w/o data plan

Is really a wonderful idea. My wife would spring for one immediately. Who can afford $80/month in this economy?

Yes, it's a wonderful idea. AT&T already thought of it. I'm pretty sure they offer an unlocked iPhone. Of course, they wont subsidize it that way, but you already knew that.

    In 2008, Munster said

that Apple would sell about 45 million iPhones in 2009. It didn't quite turn out that way. Pay no attention to these analysts. As of yet, there is no contract with China Unicom and there is no guarantee that it will be this year and moreover 2.9 million is just a pipedreamers guess. China Unicom may just buy a million and maybe not even be able to move that many iPhones because of the illegal iPhone clones that probably offer users better value. China Mobile is a proud company that will never give into Apple's capitalist demands. They will choose RIM, instead.

I'm only saying, don't focus on huge numbers but moderate, sustained growth with large profits. Apple doesn't stand a chance against RIM or Nokia as far as smartphone market share is concerned. Both of those companies will start giving their smartphones away for free in order to hold or gain market share.

    will never happen

apple has no intention of moving away from the high end niche marketplace, by selling to the prepaid phone space, where margins are razor thin.

    Do you mean to say:

    . . . where margins are RAZR thin . . .

Heh, hee. I just crack myself up sometimes.
