TomTom app ships in NZ
The TomTom iPhone application has been made available from both the New Zealand and Australian App Stores, according to iPhoneclub. The app offers four separate maps for purchase: U.S. and Canada, Western Europe, Australia and New Zealand. Despite the software release in both New Zealand and Austraia, the app has not been made available elsewhere and no firm release date has been announced by TomTom.
The program boasts the use of iPhone OS 3.0's compass capabilities to provide users with progressive directions to their destinations and features voice directions. The software additionally works in both landscape and portrait mode and includes nation-specific and international maps.
TomTom is also planning to release an accessory kit to complement the app, providing users with a car dashboard mount that plugs into the iPhone and boosts the device's GPS reception. The accessory kit will be one of the first that utilizes iPhone 3.0's external hardware capabilities.

after currency conversion (not the most reliable method for determining pricing between countries)... the US / Canada version comes in around $85! the Europe version about $125.

It does not use the compass, I have tested it. You can turn around in circles and tomtom does not react. It only reacts and knows your direction after you drive in a straight line for 10m or so .... STUPID

Love the app...Except...

Except I currently own the Belkin TuneBase FM, that I have been using for sometime with my iPhone 3GS. It plugs into my 12 V car outlet, and there is a 3.5mm line out (for audio) that I use. I figured it would be a great companion the app, as it provides charging/music playback thru the stereo while I am guided by TomTom.
In theory that would work perfectly, however in reality - when I dock my iPhone and run the TomTom app, I cannot acquire a strong enough signal to be useful. I get "Poor GPS Signal". When I disconnect the power on the TuneBase FM, or un-dock the iPhone the TomTom app works great!
The GPS API works fine in this dock - In fact the native "Maps" app can track me just fine, as well as "Mobile Navigator" (Navigon).
BEWARE before you buy - Are they forcing us to buy their iPhone dock, or hold the iPhone in our hands while we drive?
