Dell previews Zino HD mini desktop, Inspiron Z

updated 03:00 pm EDT, Thu August 13, 2009

Inspiron Z and Zino HD

Dell on Thursday previewed several upcoming computers, the Zino HD and Inspiron Z series. The Zino HD is a mini desktop that closely resembles the form-factor of a Mac Mini. The overall height appears to be greater than Apple's product, potentially due to the use of a tray for optical media instead of a slot-load system.

Specs for the Zino have yet to be announced, although the device provides a number of USB ports and an eSATA connection. The device also integrates both VGA and HDMI connectors for attaching displays.

Details for the Inspiron Z series are also slim, although the devices appear to compete amongst the category of thin and light notebooks similar to the CULV-based Studio Z series. The new Inspirons include the standard-size 14z and 15z, along with the netbook-size 11z.

Pricing information and release dates for the Inspiron Z series and Zino HD remain unknown. [via Gizmodo]

    Extra height

...because of the DVD tray? What are you smoking. That type of DVD drive is the same profile as a slot-loader. It's the standard laptop sized dvd drive.

    Mini

If Apple would make a Mini with these specs, they would double in sales. I want HDMI. If Mac Mini and AppleTV had a child.

    zino

I like the looks of the 'zino', but I would prefer a DVI over a VGA connector. I wonder what the CPU will be and how well it will run Windows 7.

    I don't get it

Isn't the Studio Hybrid supposed to be their competition for the mini? I actually prefer the even smaller footprint of the Hybrid over the mini.

    Re: extra height

Perhaps the 'extra height' is due to the fact they weren't just trying to make a computer that was exactly the same size as the mini?

Or maybe its for the s**** holes for one to be able to take it apart without need for a putty knife?

Or that they were as concerned about component accessibility as they were with some specific yet arbitrary dimension.
