Sony shows quick-charge batteries with 4x capacity

updated 12:55 pm EDT, Wed August 12, 2009

Sony batteries with 4x cap

Sony on Wednesday announced it has released new olivine-type lithium iron batteries that have four times the capacity of conventional batteries from competitors. What's more, Sony claims the batteries can be charged to within 99 percent of their capacity in just 30 minutes. The batteries sport a power density of 1,800W/kg and a life span of 2,000 charge/discharge cycles.

The batteries, while slightly longer than AA batteries and thus limiting their use, will initially be the standard equipment for new power tools due to their quick-charging characteristics. They will then expand to power more mobile electronics devices.

    Proprietary standards...

...beyond any reason have sworn me off SONY forever - this company to lock up their markets in Microsoft-like ways (eg memory stick, betamax) & I suspect it is such a corporate culture that has contributed to a decline...

when the studios let them drop the DRM, they do - as they have done with the music store already. (well, except for the Apps, although I suspect most developers prefer there to be some protection from piracy in there)

    for cars as well maybe?

Things like the Tesla, and Hybrid power packs might get good usage from these batteries as well, where the total power per KG is more important than the physical dimensions of the batteries themselves.

    wow

This is great - now those spontaneous battery fires can be that much bigger.

Right... And where is Steve Jobs' open-letter to the film industry telling them that DRM on video is bad, hurting business, and should be destroyed?

Oh, right, it doesn't exist, because Apple doesn't have the market dominated yet where removing DRM won't hurt them as much.

You guys can never fly, because planes crash all the time.
Come on! The probability of a lithium battery exploding under normal use is as high as getting hit by a rock falling from the sky. Then, some idiots still get hit by that rock...

    Wonder how much...

4x the capacity, but 4x the price maybe?
