Moto Sholes to use Android 2.0, due for AT&T too?

updated 06:45 pm EDT, Tue August 11, 2009

Moto Sholes Android 2

Motorola's first high-end Android phone, the Sholes, could be not only the flagship device for the company but for Google itself. An uncharacteristically detailed leak on Tuesday claims that the touchscreen slider is built for Android 2.0, also nicknamed "Eclair" by Google, and that the smartphone OS may actually launch first on the device. The OS should include whole-device search as well as voice recognition and text-to-speech.

The handset should also be relatively powerful, with an OMAP3430 processor that shares the same basic architecture as the chip in the iPhone 3GS.

Additionally, while the phone is expected by most to ship for Verizon first, a version with 3G for UMTS and WCDMA networks is also supposedly in the works and is deemed a likely candidate for AT&T. T-Mobile is also a possibility, though this would need a specific 1,700MHz 3G version. Any of these versions wouldn't be ready until 2010, the insider says.

A touchscreen-only form factor is also poised to show in early 2010 and would give up the keyboard for a higher-resolution 8-megapixel camera and other possible upgrades.
