AT&T's iPhone MMS service nearly ready?

updated 04:45 pm EDT, Tue August 11, 2009

MMS for US iPhones soon?

AT&T may almost be ready to deploy MMS messaging for the iPhone, one source suggests. A commentator notes that having upgraded to the iPhone 3.0.1 firmware last week, he suddenly began seeing MMS options where they had previously been taken away. Though present during the iPhone 3.0 beta, the options were ultimately removed for Americans due to AT&T's lack of support.

The carrier simultaneously promised summer availability for MMS, avoiding a specific date. AT&T iPhones are still unable to send media through the protocol, but software support could indicate that the company is almost finished laying the groundwork. The options will only show, allegedly, if a phone's AT&T firmware is at v5.0; most iPhone 3.0.1 devices continue to use v4.0. Owners can check firmware versions under the Settings > General > About menu.

hacks and now to justify that he did not so that he can go and get a replacement, this person is conjuring up a good story. I do not see no MMS option.

    ATT has failed

This is one of a few instances where AT&T has failed miserably for Apple and iPhone users.

I can almost guarantee there will be an extra charge for MMS.

    Hahahaha

Free, WORKING MMS here in Norway, poor iphone users stuck with AT&T...

Oh, and I forgot to mention that tethering is as common here as calling to your friend..

How can a huge provider like AT&T be unable to provide a basic service like MMS ?

Actually, it apparently has something to do with the iPhone, not so much ATT, as they have MMS and tethering for other devices already (at least for a couple of years).

Speculation is that it is related to Visual Voicemail and ATT apparently hacking that into their system in a similar way, causing conflicts.

    MMS...

MMS i can live without, not vital, however, not being able to play custom made ringtones which i made myself, and inability to connect to any device to do anything via BT is unreasonable, and needs to change immediately. I need custom ringtones, the built in ones do not meet my needs. My razr v3 could do bluetooth, mms, custom ringtones, but my iPhone can't? Irritating.
