Zune HD Best Buy Leak

A leak from within Best Buy tonight has potentially confirmed planned pricing and a ship date for the Zune HD. Microsoft's rumored pricing of $250 or more appears to have been lowered significantly and now, according to a Gizmodo tip, would start at $220 for a 16GB model -- $10 less than an entry iPod touch, which may have the same capacity at or near the Zune's launch. A 32GB version would be priced at $290, or again slightly less than what the next-closest iPod is likely to cost.

The same source also shows a September 8th release date for both models and supports at least one past rumor. Such a release date is both a Tuesday common to many electronics launches and is similarly timed for the September window that Apple usually chooses for its yearly music events.

Moving the price and the ship date alike could both be crucial to reviving the ailing Zune brand. Sales started dropping rapidly almost a year ago after the company only introduced a minor capacity and software revision to the media player line and had yet to introduce a touchscreen player even a year after Apple first rolled out the iPod touch. At $220, the Zune HD could be less expensive than its rival iPod while still having unique features like an OLED display and 720p video support. Simultaneously, a September release would avoid the tardy launch dates for the first two Zune generations, which weren't ready until November and consequently let Apple garner most of the pre-Thanksgiving holiday sales.

Microsoft has yet to make any of its final launch information official.

2 years late, and the main 'feature' over the iPod Touch is that you can watch HD video IF you hook it up to your HDTV (which sounds stupid for a portable device)?

    Good news

This is good news for those of us who've been thinking about getting one of the new iPod touches. Apple will be under pressure to match or beat Zume's prices. In a tight economy, it's not a good idea to be priced higher.

And in my case, if Apple prices drop a bit, I may actually spend more money to get more storage. Apple wins and I win. That's nice.

    @ Stupid

Yeah, just like those video ports on laptops. Who would want to use theirs with a native Monitor or TV resolution and considerably larger screen size? That sounds real stupid for a portable device.

    Comes in Brown?

I think the price difference will be a minor point for anyone and Apple would be ill-advised to ever market just to price.

The video link will likely be a waste as I have found in that I don't carry the cables with me for a TV connection with my MacBook or my iPod. I think that both people who do carry cables will get 3 uses each maximum of that video feature.

    iPod 16GB: $199

Just wait and see how iPod 16GB $199 kills the Zune for good.

I'd prefer an OLED screen and a better processor over a camera any day. I think it's funny you guys ignore the specs, and argue based on design alone.... which is ironic considering the only changes made in the 3GS were performance boosts.

What phone doesn't have a camera these days? You need to walk around with two S***** 3 megapixel camera's now? Think about that.

You misunderstood. A good percentage of the population has a phone. Do you argue with that? I'd argue that an even better percentage of people on tech forums have phones, probably close to 100%!

You get it now? It's called reading between the lines.
