UBS: 8GB iPhone 3GS could undo Apple profits

updated 04:40 pm EDT, Thu August 6, 2009

UBS on Apple profits

A number of positives and negatives are likely to affect Apple's gross profits in the near future, notes UBS analyst Maynard Um. Among the negatives is argued to be the possibility of an 8GB iPhone 3GS. If real the device would at least be carried by Canada's Rogers, where it would cost $99. It is believed that most iPhone buyers are opting for the $199 and $299 3GS models, rather than the $99 iPhone 3G; in putting out a $99 3GS, Um contends, Apple could leave little incentive to buy the most expensive products.

The company already faces problems with pricing on displays and DRAM memory, which Um suggests could mark its 34 percent gross profit guidance for Q409 as realistic, rather than typically conservative. Adding to the pressure is upcoming hardware, such as new iPods and a rumored device for Verizon, all of which could be forced to sell at more reasonable price levels. Apple is however expected to sell more products through its retail stores, which generate larger margins.

Microsoft is thought to pose both a threat and an opportunity. The October arrival of Windows 7 is expected to attract notebook buyers, who might otherwise consider a MacBook. At the same time, iPhones coming into the enterprise world are said to be replacing Windows Mobile devices. Some steps are still needed to ensure enterprise support, Um contends. These include 24/7 customer support, sharing of the product roadmap, and options other than iTunes when upgrading firmware.

    Wrong assumption

Many have reported that Apple's internal numbers indicate that when 4GB and 8GB EDGE iPhones were offered at $500 and $600 respectively, vast majority of people bought the $600 ones. Same thing happened last year, when majority of people were buying the $300 model instead of the $200 model. If 3GS ends up being offered at three price points, the most popular model will likely become the $200 one, rather than the 32GB $300 model.

    ummmmm

This guy sounds clueless to me. They call them analysts but the way they analyze sounds more like "their preferences" than anything else--what SHOULD be if THEY were involved. Nutjobs.

    If this, then that.. BULL

We can all sit around playing the "If this, then that" Game! The difference here is this guy is somehow getting paid to do it? See how he says MS will do better with W-7, but the iPhone needs 24/7 support??? wtf..

I wonder who is subsidizing his pay....... MS maybe???

Their is nothing about Windows 7 that is going to attract someone who is sick of Microsoft!

    Hmmmm, maybe not.

In my own experience I bought the 32 GB because I wanted more than a phone, specific things I knew were possible. If all I had wanted was a phone I might very well have gone for a cheaper model. I think "analysts" have to get a paycheck, write something, anything... 'nother case.

    Still, when you come

right down to it, whether it's $199 compared to $99, over the contract time of two years it really doesn't amount to much at all. I don't see any huge advantage of Apple offering a $99 iPhone unless it comes with a less expensive monthly contract. Maybe $99 might attract some fence sitters, but I doubt if it has very much impact at all.

Apple is not divulging any breakdown numbers and maybe those $99 3G models sold out quickly and now Apple realizes that and is offering the faster $99 3GS to pull even more people in and they won't feel cheated by getting last year's model. I only know that the iPhone demand can't be sated in most of the countries it's being offered in (Russia and India being the exceptions).

It was so funny that six months ago, analysts were begging Apple to offer less expensive iPhones so Apple would have a chance to sell nearly twice as many units.

Where is all that talk now? Now it's about less expensive iPhones causing profit loss. Most people want the more expensive models but will usually settle for a less expensive models if stock runs out. So, I think Um is wrong in that case.

    This whole thing is silly

Why is Apple offering phone in 3 different memory configurations. There should be ONE iPhone 3GS. 8 GB priced at something like 149.99 with contract, and that phone should have a MicroSD slot in it, or even better, an SD slot.

    In other news...

Apple could Lise a lot of money with their speculated $200 mac pro.

Did we miss the fact that Apple is offering a $100 iphone now, with the same contract?
