Hitachi 2TB 7200RPM HDD

Hitachi GST is now shipping its first 2TB, 7,200 RPM desktop hard drive. The fourth-generation Deskstar 7K2000 uses the company's proprietary five-platter design with relaxed bit density and perpendicular magnetic recording technology. The company is also refreshing its K1000.C Deskstar line, with capacities ranging from 160GB to 1TB.

The 3GB/s SATA drive comes equipped with 32MB of cache and uses 10 percent less power when idle than previous generations. The company claims to be the first to produce a 2TB 7200 RPM drive, although Western Digital is already shipping a similar model for $300. Seagate early this year also introduced a 2TB desktop drive with 7,200 RPM spin speed.

Hitachi says its Deskstar 7K1000.C line now delivers "best-in-class" power efficiency at 4.4 watts or less when idle. All of the new drives are RoHS compliant and halogen-free.

The new models will begin shipping in quantity sometime this quarter, although the company has not yet announced pricing information.

    Why you're not Gizmodo...

"Seagate early this year also introduced a 2TB desktop drive with 7200 RPM spin speed."

Ah, try again.... they are 5400RPM.

    Halogen free?

Dammit I want one with halogens. The best ones have halogens. What are halogens?

The Seagate Constellation ES was announced but is not yet shipping. It was scheduled to ship this calendar quarter, but Seagate technical support advised me not to expect the drive before January 2010.

The new Enterprise-class 2TB drive from Western Digital is a Green Power drive and doesn't run at 7200 rpm most of the time.

If Hitachi's new drive actually ships, it will indeed be the first 7200-rpm 2TB drive to market.
