iPhone claims third of 1H09 cellphone profits

iPhone rules phone profits

Apple has achieved disproportionate influence in the cellphone market this year, says Bernstein Research analyst Toni Sacconaghi. Calculating figures from the first half of 2009, Sacconaghi notes that while Apple was only the fifth-largest cellphone maker, with 8 percent of revenues, it did manage to obtain 32 percent of operating profits. "Even if we exclude the operating losses generated by Motorola and Sony Ericsson, Apple still accounted for 25 percent of industry profits," says the analyst.

"iPhone’s success is akin to Apple’s position in the PC industry -- where the company enjoys an estimated 25 percent of industry profits, despite capturing only 6 percent of industry revenues," he adds.

Market control is thought to be attributable to Apple being the first with a tightly-integrated mix of phone and software distribution. "With the iPhone and its Apps Store [sic], Apple has established a formidable smartphone ecosystem, which history suggests is very difficult to overcome," says Sacconaghi. The iPhone platform could in fact become a standard, he argues, in the same way that many media players now attempt to imitate the iPod.

It is argued that a number of single-purpose devices, including the iPod, will eventually become merged to form products like the iPhone, integrating technology such as cameras and GPS receivers. Apple has the advantage of more easily migrating people to such advanced products; Sacconaghi cautions, however, that while Apple may presently be able to out-accelerate the rest of the cellphone market, it could have to lower prices to go any faster. Helping would be a cheaper, dataless iPhone, the analyst comments.

    So...

All this means is Apple's gross margins are much higher than the others, which isn't surprising for Apple.

    Data Plan

While it is understood that the data plan initially does seem very expensive, it may really not be. For some users this may not be true since they may have very small data needs. However if you really look at many countries the data plans based on megs is really very expensive. I agree that $30 is high considering the amount of data we get to transfer and that too without tethering. If ATT allowed tethering on the data-plan I would find it really cheap.

    A cheaper, dataless

phone? Does he mean like what Nokia sells to those third-world countries?

s**** it. Apple's iPhone market share is growing fast enough. Why be so quick to stoop to selling something super cheap? I think Apple should hold fast to its profits and market the damn iPhone to people that can afford them. If they can't, then let them go buy something they can afford. Try to keep the iPhone value at a certain level and let the people decide if it's worth having or not. Surely, there must be enough people with money in this world that can keep the iPhone share growing for years at a medium pace.

Damn, $99 is cheap enough. If people can't afford that, then they don't need an iPhone or maybe any cellphone at all.

    Re: a cheaper

It isn't the $99, its the 30 extra a month for a data plan that many people see no point in having.

And aren't we glad Apple didn't listen to you on the iPod, or we would have never gotten the nano, mini, or shuffle.
