Clearwire 4G launch

Clearwire has announced that it is set to launch its 4G WiMAX service in ten new markets spread across Idaho, Washington and Texas beginning September 1st. The company's mobile Internet network is currently available in four locations including Atlanta; Baltimore, Las Vegas and Portland, Oregon.

Clear WiMAX is claimed to sustain 3Mb/s to 6Mb/s download speeds in typical scenarios, with bursts over 10Mb/s, compared to 3G downloads that average between 1.0Mb/s and 1.7Mb/s. Currently the company's modems work on Windows platforms, although a Mac variant is slated for release on August 17th.

The markets scheduled to begin 4G service in September include Boise, Idaho; Bellingham, Wash.; along with several areas in Texas such as Abilene, Amarillo, Corpus Christi, Lubbock, Midland/Odessa, Killeen/Temple, Waco and Wichita Falls.

Customers later this year can expect the service to arrive in Chicago, Charlotte, Dallas/Ft. Worth, Honolulu, Philadelphia and Seattle, while 2010 launch markets include New York, Boston, Washington, D.C., Houston and the San Francisco Bay Area.
