PS3 build costs drop 70%, clear path for slim model

PS3 70pc Cheaper to Make

The PlayStation 3 now costs 70 percent less to make than it did when it originally launched, Sony said Thursday during a conference call for its financial results. While the company wouldn't say how much a PS3 now costs for it to build, original estimates had the system costing $800, or even more than the original $600 launch price for a 60GB model in November 2006. If so, the game console would now cost just $240 while still holding more storage.

The price drop would achieve Sony's goal of making the PS3 profitable before it could consider a price cut and would mean that the slim PS3 on track for next month could sell for $299 while still being profitable enough to sell without requiring players to buy one or more games to offset production costs.

Most of the PS3's steep pricing has been attributed to its Blu-ray drive, which at the time the PS3 was first released often pushed many Blu-ray players above even the PS3's price. Such drives now cost much less, and Sony is known to have co-developed a much smaller, cooler running version of the Cell processor that it can produce in larger yields and at lower prices as a result.
