Sonic HD streaming codec

Sonic on Wednesday announced CineVision Adaptive HD, a codec developed specifically for streaming HD video content to Internet-connected devices. The technology combines the CineVision HD encoding process, claimed to be used for Blu-ray production, with Widevine's adaptive streaming system.

The codec is said to be capable of producing Blu-ray discs at resolutions up to 1080p, while enabling scalable streaming for buffer-free broadband playback. Widevine's client detects available bandwidth and adjusts the video quality to the highest resolution without requiring buffering. The system also takes advantage of multi-CPU encoding platforms for content distribution.

CineVision Adaptive HD is set to be deployed for Roxio CinemaNow customers. On the production end, the codec will also be provided as a choice with Sonic's CineVision Master Encoding system.
