Kodak Theatre HD Player gets YouTube, 1080p

updated 01:20 pm EDT, Wed July 29, 2009

Kodak next-gen Theatre HD

Kodak on Wednesday announced it has updated its Theatre HD Player, equipping it with the ability to view YouTube HD content, browse the web and read RSS news feeds. For this, the Theatre HD requires an Internet connection via networks over a Wi-Fi or wired link, though local photos and videos can also be played back. There is DivX, XviD, H.264 and WMV-9 video support. The updated system, Version 1.4, can now also play back 1080p videos, rather than the older setup's 720p playback.

The update also brings a Net Video feature that lets users watch free on-demand video feeds sorted by several different categories. Collage views lets users view photos on a networked PC by date, and near a specific date. Random photos can also be displayed, and selecting one to view others from a similar date is also made possible.

A Café feature lets users create a custom home page with weather, news and traffic information and photo slideshows, with pictures that were taken at or near the current date in years' past. The Version 1.4 firmware is downloaded when the new player is initially set up.

Kodak's new Theatre HD Player is priced at $200 and now available primarily through online stores such as Amazon and Sears.
