Toshiba preps its first 3.5in external HDD

Toshiba External HDD

Normally known for its notebook-sized external disks, Toshiba this afternoon leapt into full-size drives with its External HDD line. The new entries try to be more attractive than the typical drive with a rounded, black-and-chrome look that lines up with the look of most computers, including its own. All drives have not only USB but eSATA for a particularly high-speed link on those computers that support the format.

The initial roster of drives spin at 5,400RPM and work with both Macs and Windows PCs. Toshiba adds that they also include backup software, though it's not mentioned whether this applies to both operating systems or if Toshiba assumes the presence of Time Machine. Two capacities are available now and see a 640GB version costing $130 while a 1TB version lifts the price to $160.
