SmartMusic 2010 expands recording capabilities

updated 07:40 pm EDT, Tue July 28, 2009

SmartMusic 2010 released

MakeMusic has released SmartMusic 2010 (v12), a new version of its music learning application for band, orchestra, and choir. The latest version includes a redesigned interface that adds a new Home Screen and compiles all of the applications features into one place. The update also features over 300 new band and orchestra titles and allows users to continue practicing while downloading new titles. The application's recording capabilities have been expanded, providing users with a single microphone setting that works for both assessment and recording and enables recording with and without a metronome.

The program is primarily used for teaching purposes, allowing students to practice music and help attune them to the orchestra parts they are attempting. The software achieves this with its assessment feature that listens to student recordings and provides feedback. Students can also access their assignment status, grades, and teacher feedback within the application.

SmartMusic 2010 requires Mac OS X 10.4.11 and a microphone adapter. The application is available from the SmartMusic website in a student package for $30 per year and an Educators package for $130 per year. Registered users are eligible fora free upgrade.

    Avoid this company

Avoid this company. They have terrible support, and their "subscription" thing is terrible. They will bill you even when you cancelled the program. And send it to a collection agency. And the interface in this "new" version is absolutely terrible.

    Disagree

I'm very sorry to hear that ericdano has had a bad experience with MakeMusic (publisher of SmartMusic), but my experience has been just the opposite. I am a public school music teacher, and I have dealt with this company since the mid-1980s. Their support has been top notch. If there is a disappointment, they move to correct the problem immediately. They listen to their customers, and the programs reflect that. However, ericdano is correct about the billing problems, and more than one MakeMusic rep has admitted this to me. However, they are trying to get rid of the bugs, and errors in my account were corrected quickly. The interface is a matter of opinion. I think it's excellent. SmartMusic is an invaluable resource, and it's been a tremendous help to my students.

I'm very sorry to hear that ericdano has had a bad experience with MakeMusic, but my experience has been just the opposite. I am a public school music teacher, and I have dealt with this company since the mid-1980s. Their support has been conscientious and responsive. If they receive a complaint about a disappointing support experience (ex: the support rep isn't fixing the problem), they move to correct the situation immediately. (I've had this happen only twice, which is pretty darned good for that long of a relationship.) They listen to their customers, and the programs reflect that. However, ericdano is correct about the billing problems, and more than one MakeMusic rep has admitted this to me. They are working hard to get rid of the bugs. Errors in my own account were corrected quickly. The interface is a matter of opinion. I think it's excellent. SmartMusic is an invaluable resource, and it's been a tremendous help to my students.
