Novatel unveils MiFi with N. American HSPA

updated 08:20 am EDT, Tue July 28, 2009

Novatel MiFi 2372 HSPA

Novatel today catered to subscribers on AT&T and Rogers with a new version of its MiFi pocket router for HSPA-based 3G. The MiFi 2372 HSPA gives subscribers on these networks up to 7.2Mbps HSDPA to share with as many as five devices by creating its own Wi-Fi hotspot. It also adds full HSUPA for up to 5.76Mbps upstream should either carrier adopt the standard in the future.

Like previous MiFi devices, the 2372 has its own optimizations to reduce the effect of usual 3G behavior on intensive tasks like gaming or media streaming. Novatel's recent decision to open development of the web server is helped by the presence of a microSDHC slot that gives it enough storage to run more complex apps.

No mention is made of the new router being made available as a stand-alone device and consequently getting a price or ship date. It's implied that either AT&T or Rogers will sell the MiFi 2372 as a subsidized device.
