Nokia buys online mobile contact firm cellity

updated 03:35 pm EDT, Fri July 24, 2009

Nokia to aquire cellity

On Friday, Nokia today said it would acquire cellity, a private software company in Germany that specializes in bringing social networking to cellphones. When the deal is finalized, cellity and its services will shut down and its 14 employees will be absorbed into Nokia. The move is seen as key in Nokia's attempt to offer improved social networking services.

Cellity has developed an app that allows users to import contact data from a range of sources that include cellphone address books, Outlook, Twitter and popular social networks to one place. Then, cellphone or web browser users can send all types of messages to these contacts, with incoming and outgoing messages synchronized across all the services.

The agreement should be concluded by the end of the summer, at which point cellity staff will be rolled into Nokia's services group.
