Nokia E72 passes FCC tests

Nokia's replacement for its E71 business phone, the E72, has now passed FCC testing in North America Model (NAM) trim, indicating it will likely soon come to North American wireless providers with native 3G. Compared to the E71, the E72 is near identical in terms of dimensions, though the former's directional pad is replaced with an optical trackpad. It receives a new e-mail client from the E75 with a number of improvements as well as new instant messaging support.

Otherwise, the handset gets a 5-megepixel camera, up from 3.2, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. The GPS sensor now has compass support and there is an active noise cancellation feature. It can also support faster 3G data speeds of up to 10.2Mbps downstream and 2Mbps upstream, though these won't be available in the US. Thanks to an updated document viewer, Office 2007 format files can be read out of the box.

Prices and a release date in North America can only be guessed at, but European handsets cost the equivalent of $489 contract-free. Its 850MHz band support makes it suitable for use on the AT&T and Rogers networks.
