Verizon pushing Slacker

Verizon announced on Thursday that it will soon update its subscribers' BlackBerry Storm handsets with the Slacker Radio application. The over-the-air push update will happen during the next few days, and give Storm users access to Slacker's free, limited-control service. When users hear a song they like, they can purchase it without disrupting their listening session, provided the track exists in Verizon's V CAST Music service.

The Slacker application icon will appear on the home screen, but they will have the option of placing it in a folder or otherwise hiding it. The application will allow users to cache stations to the handset's storage memory and get a preview at what song and by which artist will be playing next. The touch interface for the program can be set up vertically or horizontally on the Storm's touchscreen.

Slacker Radio is included with Email and Web for BlackBerry plans, which begin at $30 in addition to a voice plan.

Music fans could previously download the Slacker Radio application for a wide variety of smartphones free of charge, though these have never had direct integration with carrier music stores. Slacker also offers a paid subscription service.
