Nikon to fix D5000 startup issue for free

updated 12:05 pm EDT, Thu July 16, 2009

Free fix for Nikon D5000

Nikon on Thursday announced it would fix for free a power-up problem with its recent D5000 DSLR camera for owners. The issue is with an electronic component that powers up the DSLR but which reportedly doesn't meet Nikon's specifications. As a result, under some circumstances, the camera doesn't power up at all until a subsequent try. The non-powering issue is present regardless of whether or not the camera is running on battery or the state of charge.

The company adds that it's setting up a repair facility that will be ready to go by July 23rd, and will cover all costs of repairs and shipping the DSLR back and forth to its customers. To minimize downtime, it hopes to limit return shipping to two days, where possible.

While not all D5000s are affected by the issue, Nikon will also put up a serial look-up tool on its website on July 23rd to help owners check whether their particular example is affected. At the same time, instructions will be posted on how to go about shipping the affected D5000s.
