Dell mulls Chrome, Moblin

Dell via its blog on Wednesday announced it will evaluate the cloud-based Chrome OS for use in its products, possibly tying it in with the Android OS, also from Google. At the same time, the company said it is also likely to integrate the Linux-based Moblin operating system into its ultra portable computing devices, or netbooks. Either OS has its advantages, Dell claims, with the former not only offering what Dell calls an experience-targeted platform, but is also cost effective compared to the traditional Windows operating systems.

The experience Dell is talking about is a particular feature that the netbook with the particular operating system excels at. This is usually a quick boot up time that lets users quickly access e-mail, web browsing or multimedia playback. Chrome OS is also less resource intensive than Windows, for example, and takes up less space, as many apps are Internet based.

Moblin, Dell says, is ideally suited for netbooks not only because of its low cost but also since it is tailored for use on devices with small screens, since all applications take up the entire screen of the device. The software's ease of use is another reason Dell wants to integrate it into its products, including a network connectivity manager that is hard to distinguish from an integrated application. Competitor Acer recently announced it would use Moblin for its nettops, desktops and notebooks.

Buyers are likely to see Moblin come to Dell products sooner than Chrome OS, as Dell is already in talks with Moblin partners Intel and Canonical on products. A fully grown version of Chrome is expected to to be released sometime in 2010.
