T-Mobile UK calls iPhone negotiations 'speculation'

updated 10:25 am EDT, Wed July 15, 2009

T-Mobile on UK iPhone

T-Mobile UK will not respond to rumors that it could begin carrying the iPhone 3G, according to an official statement. The company dismisses reports of negotiations as "merely speculation," on which it cannot comment. The statement does not represent a denial however, leaving an open end to the idea that T-Mobile could become the UK's second iPhone carrier.

Sources have said that the company could begin selling the 3G within several months, following the end of O2's long-running exclusive. An unusual aspect of reports so far is the suggestion that T-Mobile might only carry the 3G, and not the 3GS, Apple's flagship handheld. Such a deal could leave T-Mobile offerings less attractive, but still in a position to force more competitive offerings from O2, which also sells the 3G. High prices at O2 have sometimes been blamed for slow UK sales.

    Not to mention . . .

O2's very poor 3G coverage, which has been revealed after OFCOM (our regulator) was forced to release it's maps of coverage maps by supplier (and even then, at far less detail than they really have).

As for it only covering the 3G but not 3GS - presumably because the exclusivity deal is 18 months - the 3G will be out of exclusive just before Xmas.

    I'm now tempted to wait another 6 months . . . .
