New LG Chocolate to get 21:9 multi-touch LCD?

LG Chocolate Video Leak

A leaked video for the next Chocolate phone suggests that the device will not only be LG's first touchscreen Chocolate but also more explicitly tailored to fight the iPhone. Its centerpiece should be an unusual 4-inch, 800x345 display; it should not only play movies shot in a theater-native 21:9 aspect ratio at full resolution but also support multi-touch, including pinching to zoom in Google Maps and other key apps. The clip shows the familiar S-Class UI from newer LG phones but may have different interface elements than these devices, such as both Google Maps and the contact list.

Outside of its screen, the phone would tackle the higher end of LG's phone mix with 7.2Mbps 3G over HSPA, GPS, Wi-Fi and a camera of unknown resolution that takes advantage of the touchscreen for autofocusing. The Chocolate label has usually been reserved for LG's most media-oriented phones in the Black Label series and implies this device is targeted more at the music- and movie-friendly audience of competitors like the iPhone than the more modestly-equipped Arena or the luxury-first GD900.

While no immediate clues are given as to the release date in the video itself, the BL40 codename corresponds to an earlier rumor of a Telus version of that phone with the exact same resolution that would still use HSPA. The Canadian provider has officially said its HSPA network would go live in early 2010 but has dropped multiple hints that it may be ready for October, supporting beliefs that the new Chocolate will be ready for later this year.

Meh, LG phones break after a month, anyone who gets this instead of an iPhone is just asking for trouble.

Looks good in the video. My past experience with "Chocolate" phones is they are cheap plastic c***. But if LG has improved the build quality of this puppy, it could stand to take sales away from iPhone, especially if you can get it without AT&T.

I would consider one if it's well made. The screen looks fantastic and the interface is slick. Not too bad. Time will tell.

I sure wouldn't mind it if Apple were to make the next version of the iPhone a little bit longer - not quite this extreme, but just a tiny bit - enough to make the screen 16:9, and bump the rez one step - to 640x360 pix.
