Rupert Murdoch: no plans for own e-book reader

No News Corp e-book reader

In a recent interview, Rupert Murdoch has denied rumors of News Corp. developing its own e-book reader. When prompted on the possibility of the development of such a device, the CEO responded to the Wall Street Journal by saying he "[doesn't] think that's likely" to occur in the near future. Murdoch did, however, expand on it, hinting News Corp. is involved in talks with hardware manufacturers on wireless readers for books, newspapers or magazines.

He went on to mention the companies by name, which included but may not have been limited to Sony, Fujitsu and Samsung. Murdoch also indicated high-quality devices are about a year or two from hitting the market, though as a content provider, News Corp. will be "absolutely neutral," he said.

"We're very happy to have our products distributed over any device provided it's only going to subscribers who are paying for it," Murdoch ended.

Amazon, who many consider the front runner in e-book readers with its Kindle devices, has said that a color reader of its own remains years away due to the technological hurdles associated with clearly visible, fast and inexpensive color e-paper displays.
