New Snow Leopard build tweaks speed, interface

updated 10:45 am EDT, Fri July 10, 2009

New Snow Leopard build

Apple is seeding a new beta build of Mac OS X Snow Leopard, developers say. Titled 10A402a, the build measures 1.3GB, and is the second to have arrive in a span of two weeks. Although Apple describes the software as having "general operating system fixes for stability, compatibility, and security," the most noticeable changes are said to include responsiveness, which is faster throughout the OS.

The build also displays some interface tweaks, such as darker, dimpled slider buttons. More obvious is a new contextual pop-up menu for the Dock, which now displays white text on a charcoal background, instead of black text on silver. The format stands in stark contrast to most of Mac OS X, but is consistent with some other tweaks, such as the look of QuickTime X.

Snow Leopard is set to launch in October, and cost approximately $29 as an upgrade for Leopard owners, or more new.

    Speed is good

Personally, I'm mostly looking forward to Grand Central. It's pretty frustrating to have a powerful 8-core Mac Pro just to watch iMovie only use two cores when it's rendering something. Same with Quicktime.

    Dramatically nice

Ooh, that colour scheme looks somehow dramatic and exciting.

I'm constantly impressed by how each iteration of Mac OS X makes its predecessors look clunky and old, even though at the time each version looks superb.

    great...

Just what we demanded, a change to the look of SOME of the UI elements.

And, yet, you probably still can't just click on a folder in the dock and have it open, like what happens when you click on any other item in the dock.

Well, it won't help iMovie much until iMovie gets updated to take advantage of it though.

And I'm sure iMovie using only two cores (I'm impressed it was updated to use two of them) was probably due to as much being a way to drive the likes of you to Final Cut Studio than because lack of ability.

    Show in Finder

You can click on the folder in the dock and there is a "Show in Finder" button. I really don't use stacks unless I collect alot of pictures I want to see in grid view. Quick Look is the most useful feature in my opinion.

    Stacks Suck Still

I just want was demoed before leopard was out. Stacks where not meant to replace folders in the dock. Yet that is what seems to have happened. Originally a stack was just a group of related stuff that you could throw in the Dock. There was no folder..... etc to worry about. Now if I want something similar I have to make a bunch of aliases and put them in a folder and then put that in the Dock. Which I was already doing before stacks, which also makes them almost completely useless!
Folders already worked in the Dock I wanted/want something new! That actually reduces my work load.

    Low ranking?

Seriously? It doesn't bother you that Apple's software doesn't use more than 2 cores? I think it's pretty retarded. LouZer: Making excuses on Apple's behalf is worthless. There's no reason iMovie should only be using two cores. None. And it's not just iMovie either, it's Garageband, Quicktime, etc. Just because it's consumer level software doesn't mean it should be arbitrarily crippled.

And obviously I would expect iLife '10 would incorporate grand central, why else would I have mentioned it? I'm looking forward to being able to render movies/songs in iLife 3-4x faster after Snow Leopard/iLife '10 comes out.
