Creative finally readying first touch device

Creative Zii at FCC

Creative's first touchscreen media device has been revealed today through an FCC filing. Just called the Zii, the player is only shown in outline but already reveals some of its key selling points. The name suggests it will be based on the dual-core Zii processor, and an "HD camera" logo near an appropriate port suggests the device will have that level of video capture and playback support.

Other details are less than clear, though a space on the side may point to Creative including an SD card slot not unlike the ZEN. A second version of the player, known as the Zii EGG, appears intended specificaly for developers and directly implies third-party app support on both devices. Requiring FCC testing also implies wireless support and thus the addition of Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or both.

A launch date remains a mystery for either Zii model, which could be the first major media player update from Creative since the ZEN X-Fi and, again, its first touchscreen player. The company has been struggling financially while it trails behind competitors like Apple's iPod touch and Samsung's P series in terms of features, and last year was forced to sell its headquarters to raise funds. I realize the picture isn't the final image but wow, could that look MORE like an iPhone?

    I thought...

I thought they were planning on beating Apple in this market?

What I don't understand is why they don't stop this whole media player battle they've been having and simply focus on their audio equipment that was what kept them going for a long time. To be honest since they've done all this crazy anti-apple stuff I'm less likely to buy their stuff.

Um, since even apple would admit that video is where its at, not audio (that's so 5 years ago), if they just focused on audio they'd be losing money soon enough.
