Canon Photo Printers Jul09

Canon this morning revealed a trio of photo printers that bring a handful of noteworthy new features. The PIXMA MP560 is Canon's smallest all-in-one inkjet with both Wi-Fi and duplex printing in the same box. It also centers on a second-generation photo correction feature that can adjust for exposure in different areas of a shot as well as brightness and saturation. A new USB port supports printing directly from a flash drive or similar direct storage without having to first sync with a computer.

The MP560 is the fastest of the three new models and can print 4-inch by 6-inch shots in grayscale at 9.2 images per minute or in full color at 6 per minute; a full photo-grade shot takes 39 seconds. In software, users can pick a particular section of a website to print rather than waste ink on menus or other inessential parts. Canon delivers this model in August for $150.

Scaling back, the MP490 drops wireless, duplexing and direct USB printing, uses a smaller 1.8-inch LCD (down from 2 inches) and slows printing to 8.4 images per minute in grayscale and 4.8 in color. Full-quality photos take 43 seconds. It keeps the photo correction and other features but, as a result of the feature concessions, drops to a $100 price. The MP490 ships at the same time as its more expensive sibling.

A new flagship in the portable SELPHY line, the CP790, is just as new. Besides changing from yellow to green, the printer brings image quality improvements, particularly in face detection color accuracy, and a new creative tool that lets users choose layouts, colors and art stamps to personalize a photo before it reaches the tray. A memory card slot and an optional removable battery continue to separate it from the PIXMA line, but a new storage basket also lets users carry it around with key accessors like its power cable and both ink plus paper supplies. The CP790 has the largest display of the introductions today with a 3-inch LCD and should ship this month for $180.
